Job Description

  • Neurologist
  • Naval Medical Center Portsmouth (NMCP)
  • Portsmouth, VA

Duties/Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Examine patients, order, and evaluate the full range of tests including electrophysiology, radiological, and laboratory tests, make diagnoses, and prescribe appropriate pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic treatments.
  • Make consultations with other specialists as deemed necessary.
  • Communicate with patients, referring physicians, and back to the appropriate primary care manager for the management of disorders outside the specialty of Neurology.
  • Provide prescription renewal and telephone consultative services.
  • Provide recommendations or definitive evaluation for neurology problems in the referral region through phone consultation, telemedicine, and authorization and evaluation of air evacuation patients as appropriate.
  • Periodically provide episodic care to clinic patients on a walk-in basis.
  • Perform neurologic assessments in the outpatient setting, as inpatient consultations (ward, intensive care unit (ICU), step-down unit, and occasionally recovery room), and occasionally in the emergency room.
  • Clinically direct, teach, observe, and provide clinical input to the performance evaluations of residents, interns, and medical students.
  • Provide input to the review and critique of house staff and student(s) written evaluations of patients for whom the Neurologist is responsible.
  • Provide clinical input to the formal mid-point and monthly counseling session and written clinical evaluation of all house staff and students who rotate on Neurology.
  • Participate in the formal teaching curriculum of the Internal Medicine Residency Program.
  • Contribute to recommendations for improvements in the Internal Medicine Curriculum in compliance with the National Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and Residency Review Committee (RRC) requirements.
  • Serve as a clinical mentor for a specific resident as assigned by the Internal Medicine Residency Program Director.
  • Provide periodic chart reviews of peers for quality assurance purposes.

Qualifications:

  • Degree/Education: The physician will have successfully completed an Undergraduate Program, Medical School (M.D. or D.O.), Internship, Residency, and Fellowship Program.
  • Certifications in addition to Basic Life Support: Possess and maintain current certification in Pediatric Advance Life Support (PALS).
  • Experience: Possess a minimum of three (3) years experience as a full-time Neurologist within the last five (5) years or graduate from a neurology residency program within the preceding twelve (12) months.
  • Board Certification: Be board certified in Neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology or the American Osteopathic Board of Neurology and Psychiatry.
  • Licensure/Registration: Possess and maintain Pediatric Board Certification.
  • Additional Requirements: Provide two (2) letters of recommendation written within the last two (2) years attesting to the HCW’s clinical skills. At least one (1) letter must be from a physician or supervisor who has personally observed and evaluated the HCW. Reference letters shall attest to the HCW’s communication skills and ability to relate to patients as well as professional and other interpersonal skills among staff members and must include the name, title, phone number, date of reference, address, and signature of the individual providing reference. Letters of recommendation must have been written within the preceding two (2) years.

Work Schedule: Specific days, hours, and shift lengths will be scheduled by the designated government representative. The specific hours will be determined by the supervisor depending on patient volume and clinical scheduling needs one (1) month prior to services being rendered. Any changes in the schedule shall be coordinated between the HCW and the government. Any planned absences of the HCW shall be communicated to the government supervisor in advance of the absence.

Duty Hours: Services shall be provided Monday through Friday, between the hours of 0630 and 1800 hours. Shifts will normally be scheduled for an eight-and-a-half (8.5) hour period, to include an uncompensated thirty (30) minute lunch break. In no instance will the HCW be required to provide services in excess of eighty (80) hours per two-week period.

On-Call Hours: The HCW shall receive calls from the NMCP resident on board and the HCW shall provide guidance via telephone. The HCW shall be responsible for pager on-call from 1600 to 0800 each day for seven (7) consecutive days. The HCW shall provide a pager on-call on a rotational basis with other HCWs at NMCP. Every five (5) weeks (one (1) in five (5) coverage), the HCW shall be responsible for managing the inpatient consult service as well as the evaluation of urgent outpatient neurological consults. The HCW will typically receive between twenty (20) and thirty (30) calls per week. Only on rare occasions shall the HCW be required to return to NMCP after normal working hours to provide services. This needs for more urgent evaluations will be based on clinical judgment.
