SUMMARY:

UIHS Physicians provide comprehensive medical care to clients of United Indian Health Services (UIHS).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Provides clinical care as granted via the UIHS credentialing and privileging process.
  • Elicits and records information about client’s medical history, surgical history, social history, family history, and other pertinent information related to the care of clients.
  • Conducts appropriate physical exams based on the client’s chief complaints and reason for visit.
  • Orders or executes various tests, analyses, and diagnostics to provide information on client’s condition.
  • Analyzes reports and findings of tests and of examination, and diagnoses condition.
  • Administers or prescribes treatments and medication as needed.
  • Abstains from costly, unnecessary, or excessive testing and treatment.
  • Orders and oversees the vaccination of clients to immunize clients from communicable diseases using current guidelines.
  • Advises and refers clients concerning diet, hygiene, and methods for prevention of disease.
  • Educates clients on the importance of preventive services, such as screening tests, counseling services, and preventive medicines, as well as modalities to detect illnesses before they cause symptoms or problems.
  • Reports births, deaths, and outbreak of contagious diseases to governmental authorities.
  • Refers clients to medical specialists or other practitioners for specialized treatment.
  • Makes house and emergency calls to attend to clients unable to visit office or clinic, if necessary.
  • Conducts physical examinations to provide information needed for admission to school, consideration for jobs, or eligibility for insurance coverage.
  • Consults and advises Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants at UIHS clinics.
  • Provider supervision to Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners as assigned.
  • Adheres with accreditation and compliance standards/guidelines.
  • Attends department meetings and other meetings as assigned.
  • Maintains a professional, organized, and clean working environment by following organizational policies, guidelines, and safety standards.
  • Assists in development of departmental policy, procedures, and quality improvement activities within the clinic as directed.
  • Provides after hours back-up phone coverage for client advice by providing at home call coverage for UIHS at least five (5) weeks per calendar year.
  • Participates in the peer review process by returning reviews in a timely manner and participates in peer review meetings as needed.
  • Physician may be assigned to selected specific duties or committees based on interest, experience, and expertise; including, but not limited to: Diabetes Advisor, Laboratory Director, Infection Prevention Committee Liaison, etc.
  • Performs all duties in accordance with the UIHS Mission, Vision, and Guiding Principles.
  • Specialized/Advanced Inpatient and Outpatient Clinical Duties – may provide via contract specifics

  • Provides medical, pediatric and/or obstetrical services as privileged through local hospitals.
  • Participates in on-call responsibilities and hospital duties, as outlined by contractual agreement.
  • SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    This job has no supervisory responsibilities although the physician will direct the work of others as it relates to client care. If applicable, the Physician will supervise individual physician assistants or work as collaborating physician for individual nurse practitioners in accordance with UIHS policies and procedures.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: 

All post-doctorial residency training must be done in an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) approved residency training program.

Physician I:

  • Graduate education to include graduation from an accredited Allopathic or Osteopathic Medical School.
  • Post-Doctoral Graduate year 1 completion from a primary care Residency Training Program.

Physician II:

  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in an American Board of Medical Specialties (AMBS) approved Board.

Physician III:

  • Meet above criteria with greater than five (5) years of post-doctoral training clinical experience, or,
  • Have Board Certification in a Primary Care related Fellowship from an AMBS approved Board.

Physician IV:

  • Meet the above criteria with greater than ten (10) years of post-doctoral training clinical experience, or,
  • Have greater than five (5) years clinical experience after Fellowship Board Certification in an AMBS approved Board.
