Located in central Kentucky southeast of Louisville, Lebanon is the county seat of Marion County. Marion County is home to Maker's Mark Distillery, a small batch bourbon whiskey distillery that offers tours and is part of the American Whiskey Trail and the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. The distillery was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 31, 1974, and designated a National Historic Landmark on December 16, 1980. The Loretto Motherhouse is also located in Marion County, and the working farm is a place of extraordinary natural beauty with historical buildings as well as the residence of active and retired members of the Sisters of Loretto, the first native American order of Roman Catholic nuns.
