Position Summary

UI Health Ventures seeks general pediatricians to work in University of Iowa Stead Family Department of Pediatrics. The individual selected will join the Division of General Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine as a Visiting Professor to provide patient care and consultative services as a pediatrician.

The University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine is one of the top biomedical research institutions in the nation and ranked 38th overall by the 2020 U.S. News & World Report and 41st among public medical schools for NIH funding in FY18. Stead Family Department of Pediatrics ranked 27th in NIH funding among all public pediatric departments nationwide in FY19. The ACGME-accredited pediatric residency program at the Children’s Hospital trains 47 pediatric residents.

The Stead Family Department of Pediatrics comprises the medical and research staff of University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital, one of the nation’s top-ranked pediatric care and research institutions. It is the only university-affiliated hospital in Iowa devoted solely to the care of infants, children, adolescents and young adults, and is Iowa’s only accredited Level 1 Regional Resource Pediatric Trauma Center. In 2019-2020 University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital ranked in six pediatric specialties in the Best Children’s Hospitals U.S. News and World Report, including neonatology, orthopedics, diabetes and endocrinology, nephrology, neurology and neurosurgery, and is the only hospital in Iowa to be nationally ranked by U.S. News and World Report for children’s care. A new 190-bed children’s hospital opened in February 2017.

Position Responsibilities

• The Pediatrician will function independently to plan, deliver, and evaluate health care for pediatric outpatient populations.
• Focus on the caring for patients to manage care, improve resource utilization, and decrease costs to patients and the institution while providing personalized care
• The position requires staffing evenings, weekends, and holidays on a rotational basis to be determined according to clinical service needs
• Facilitate referral of care for patients’ care outside of the scope of the provider (Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit, Surgery, Pathology, Radiology, etc.).
• Perform /order medical diagnostic and therapeutic procedures
• Prescribe, dispense and/or deliver medication
• Consult/collaborate with other care team members; occasionally including fellows, residents, physicians, nurses, etc
• Use judgment to apply/adopt information within total clinical picture to address health issues
• Influence others to adopt best practices
• Triage phone calls and questions within outpatient management
• Compliance with Internal Policies and External Regulations for Safe and Effective Care Delivery and Health Profession and Education:
• Complete patient medical records, reports, and forms to record treatment for treatment record and billing purposes
• Provide health education to patients and families
• Maintain knowledge of and follow clinical practice guidelines and standard operating procedures (SOPs)
• Administration/ Human Resources Management
• Establish and maintain procedures and systems to assure staff compliance with policies and standards of care
• May serve on committees to enhance patient care and operations
• Assure team provides effective collaboration/communications
• May provide feedback and coaching to other team members to assure quality of care
• Schedule: Rotating day, night, weekend and holiday shifts

Education Requirements

Bachelor's degree

Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.)

Experience Requirements

3-year residency
