Job Description

The Clinical Psychologist is licensed to practice independently in the State of Illinois and assumes responsibility for providing the full range of psychological services to adult and geriatric patients, supportive services to patient families, and consultation services to physicians, staff, and administration.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Exemplifies the RML REACH (Service Excellence) culture by demonstrating respect, excellence, appreciation, concern and honor in all interactions with patients, families and co-workers, and as identified in departmental and hospital wide behavioral expectations.
  • Assess and treat adult and geriatric patients at RML Specialty Hospital who require Psychological Services, incorporating knowledge of the psychological and physiological issues of aging, where applicable, into the assessment and treatment plan.
  • Participate in weekly multi-disciplinary staff meetings in order to coordinate treatment, and to provide consultation regarding the psychological state and needs of each patient.  Provide information when needed regarding developmental (aging), cognitive, cultural, religious, or other issues which impact care for each individual patient.
  • Measure and document functional improvements in patients who are receiving psychological services.
  • Act as a resource to the Unit Staff, Physicians and Administrators in order to facilitate patient care as well as needs of employees and visitors.
  • Conduct family support groups and family orientation groups.  Participate in family meetings.  Support patients, families and staff in identifying and addressing ethical issues, especially in relation to end of life care.
  • Develop and implement department Quality Improvement activities, and participate in institution-wide Performance Improvement projects.  Participate in peer review process with Clinical Psychologist colleague to establish consistency in treatment standards and promote improved care of patients.
  • Follow all RML policies and procedures.  Attend meetings and inservices as requested.  Complete all annual employee requirements (annual review, performance evaluation, PPD, etc.) in a timely fashion.
  • Initiate, support, or participate in Clinical Research Protocols, as well as publications and presentations stemming from that research, as applicable.
  • Initiate, support, and participate in meetings and inservices sponsored by the Psychology Department.
  • Provide daily charge information using approved formats.
  • Provide professional supervision of Post-doctoral Fellow(s) and Practicum Students(s) when present and as applicable.
  • Evaluate clinical environment and help to provide an environment that is safe, based on each patient’s age, developmental status, and level of functioning.  Understand and apply applicable components of facility patient safety initiatives, such as using two patient identifiers, etc.  Maintain confidentiality of the patient’s medical information, monitor appropriate documentation, and comply with HIPAA guidelines.
  • Support a safe work environment for self and others, by reporting unsafe conditions, and by using appropriate safe work practices such as proper body mechanics and applicable safety devices (PPE).  Comply with all components of employee health requirements.

JOB REQUIREMENTS & CHARACTERISTICS

Skills & Abilities

  1. The interpersonal skills necessary to establish rapport and interact therapeutically with persons from all backgrounds, socioeconomic status, and educational and developmental levels.
  2. The communication skills necessary to interact effectively with acutely ill patients, including those with impaired speech due to tracheostomy.
  3. The collaboration skills necessary to work effectively in a team environment, demonstrating flexibility in addressing priority clinical needs.

 

Knowledge & Experience

  1. Ph.D. or Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology from an APA-approved Institution.
  2. Successful completion of an APA-Approved clinical internship.
  3. Relevant experience and training in health psychology.
  4. Competency in age-related care for the adult and elderly patient.

Computer skills, including word processing.

License & Certifications

Current license to practice Clinical Psychology in the State of Illinois.

 

Working Conditions

Patient Care Unit and professional office.
