Winchester is located in central Kentucky just 20 miles east of Lexington. Daniel Boone founded Fort Boonesborough in 1775 as the first settlement in the area, and the city of Winchester recognizes this legendary pioneer and frontiersman with its annual Daniel Boone Pioneer Festival held during Labor Day weekend. The city also features one of the few intact Victorian downtowns in the nation, with a splendid blend of richly designed Victorian commercial buildings and handsome modern structures. Winchester offers antique shops and restaurants as well as other interesting sites close by, such as Ashland, the estate of Kentucky statesman Henry Clay, and the city of Berea, the folk arts and crafts capital of Kentucky.
