(Login for Information)Irving Medical Center (CUIMC) is seeking a highly motivated Genetic Counselor to join the Interdepartmental Genetic Counseling Program, administered through the Department of Pathology and Cell Biology. The successful candidate will provide comprehensive clinical genetic counseling services while collaborating closely with multidisciplinary clinical teams, molecular diagnostic laboratories, and research investigators to advance precision medicine across Columbia University. While the position is administratively based in the Department of Pathology and Cell Biology, approximately 80% of the incumbent's effort will be dedicated to clinical, research, and educational activities within the Department of Medicine, with the remaining effort supporting the Interdepartmental Genetic Counseling Program.

 

This position offers a unique opportunity to integrate patient care, genomic medicine, research, and education within one of the nation's leading academic medical centers.

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Provide genetic counseling services to patients and families under limited supervision.
  • Obtain detailed medical and family histories, perform risk assessment, and coordinate appropriate genetic testing.
  • Explain the benefits, limitations, and potential outcomes of genetic testing to patients and families.
  • Interpret genomic test results and communicate findings to patients, families, and referring providers.
  • Prepare clinical documentation and summary reports.
  • Serve as a liaison between clinical providers and the Precision Genomics Laboratory (PGL), the Laboratory of Personalized Genomic Medicine (PGM), and other molecular diagnostic laboratories.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary specialty clinics and genomic medicine initiatives across CUIMC.

Research Responsibilities

  • Support genomic research studies through patient identification, recruitment, informed consent, and coordination of study procedures.
  • Review medical records and assist with phenotype collection and data management.
  • Maintain study documentation and ensure compliance with IRB requirements and institutional policies.
  • Participate in variant interpretation and contribute to genotype-phenotype correlation efforts.
  • Collaborate with investigators on research projects, abstracts, presentations, and scientific manuscripts.

Educational Responsibilities

  • Provide education to physicians, trainees, nurses, genetic counselors, and other healthcare professionals regarding genomic medicine and genetic testing.
  • Participate in educational conferences, professional meetings, and continuing education activities.
  • Contribute to teaching and mentorship of students, residents, fellows, and other trainees as appropriate.

Minimum Education Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Genetic Counseling.

Other Qualifications

  • Board Certified or Board Eligible by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC).
  • Eligibility for New York State licensure as a Genetic Counselor.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in clinical genetic counseling within an academic medical center.
  • Experience coordinating genomic testing and interpreting genetic test results.
  • Experience participating in clinical research, including patient enrollment and regulatory compliance.
  • Interest in scholarly activities, including presentations and scientific publications.
  • Spanish or other foreign language proficiency is desirable but not required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary clinical and research teams.

    • $108,748.00- $108,748.00
