Clinical Decision Unit | Monterey, California

(Login for Information) is seeking Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, or Family Medicine physicians to join our Clinical Decision Unit (CDU) at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula (CHOMP).

Job Overview

  • Part-time physician position beginning January–February 2027
  • Opportunity to transition to full-time work in the future
  • Day shift: 8:00 AM–4:00 PM
  • Fair and equitable scheduling
  • $250/hour – 1099 independent contractor (preferred)
  • $200/hour – W-2 employee
  • Experience in observation medicine preferred, but not required

About the Clinical Decision Unit

Our 12-bed, 24-hour Clinical Decision Unit cares for patients who require additional evaluation, treatment, or short-term monitoring after their Emergency Department evaluation but may not require inpatient admission. The CDU physician independently evaluates and manages a diverse group of patients while determining appropriate safe disposition.

Why Observation Medicine?

Observation medicine combines elements of emergency medicine and hospitalist withoutthe pace of a traditional emergency department shift or the longitudinal workload of a hospitalist service. Our goal is to provide high-quality care while keeping observation stays efficient—ideally less than 24 hours.

Required Skills

  • Medical degree (MD or DO) from an accredited institution with active licensure in the practicing state or region.
  • Strong knowledge of healthcare diagnosis procedures, medical terminology, and physiology principles.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA regulations and commitment to maintaining patient confidentiality at all times.

Preferred Skills

  • Proficiency with EMR/EHR systems like Epic or similar platforms for documentation and patient management.
  • Experience in observation medicine preferred, but not required.
