Full-Time Consultation-Liaison Psychiatrist for Large Public Health and Hospital System in Silicon Valley
Job Description
Better Health for All
Santa Clara Valley Healthcare (SCVH), a large public teaching healthcare system, affiliated with Stanford University School of Medicine, is seeking a full-time BC/BE full-time BC/BE psychiatrist to join our Division of Consultation-Liaison (C&L) Psychiatry.
About Our Organization
About the Department
The Department pf Psychiatry currently comprises outpatient, emergency, and inpatient services, and will be expanding its service offerings to include child and adolescent psychiatric care, with the opening of the new Behavioral Health Pavilion (BHP) in fall 2026. Our services include a Behavioral Health Urgent Care (BHUC), where walk-in crisis intervention is available 6 days per week, a 24/7 psychiatric emergency room, Emergency Psychiatric Services (EPS – up to 44 adult beds, 12 child beds), two adult inpatient psychiatric units (42 total beds), child and adolescent inpatient psychiatric units (35 total beds), adult and juvenile custody clinics, and several adult and child/adolescent mental health and substance treatment clinics at various geographically convenient locations in the county.
Division of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry
The Division of Consultation-Liaison (CL) Psychiatry provides psychiatric consultation across (Login for Information) (SCVMC), working with internal medicine, surgery, OB/GYN, pediatrics, trauma, burn, and rehabilitation services, and rounding at the bedside in the surgical and trauma ICUs. The CL service is now expanding to the County health system's other enterprise hospitals.
The consult population is among the most acute in the Bay Area. Our CL providers treat all patients who require psychiatric care, whatever their insurance or acuity. Our hospitals draw the most critically ill and injured patients from across the greater region, so the division routinely manages serious mental illness and critical medical illness in the same patient.
Our clinical values are presence, rigor, and partnership with early involvement at the bedside, careful reasoning in all cases, and close collaboration with the primary team. The division invests in the systems side of consultation, building the workflow and developing policies that keep care consistent across sites and clinicians. Teaching and scholarship are embedded in our daily work with bedside teaching for residents, in-services for all members of the care team, and a monthly journal club.
About the Position
The position is hospital based, with no outpatient responsibilities, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The psychiatrist joins a team of physicians and works alongside
dedicated nursing, psychology, and a behavioral response team. The position rotates across the system's acute hospitals. The core of the work is the same at every site - consultation on medically and surgically complex inpatients, delirium, agitation, capacity assessment, and early, proactive engagement with hospitalist and surgical teams.
At SCVMC, this extends to the full spectrum of hospital psychiatry, including involuntary holds under California's LPS Act. The service is growing, and the role includes a hand in program building led by the division chief and shared across the team. Experience developing programs within an acute care setting is desirable.
This position requires board certification or board eligibility in general psychiatry and licensure (or eligibility for licensure) in California. Fellowship training or board certification in consultation-liaison psychiatry or combined internal medicine-psychiatry (Med-Psych) training is preferred.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate experience and proficiency in delivering CL care to a diverse patient population in a culturally responsive way, with the strong communication and collaboration skills that consultation work requires.
We offer competitive compensation; a generous comprehensive benefit package (including 36 days of leave per year; 13 holidays; 5 CME days); comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage; long-term disability insurance; AD&D insurance; life insurance; retirement plans; paid malpractice with tail coverage; and possible relocation reimbursement (pre-approval required).
