Job Description
- Monday–Friday Duty hours between 6:00 AM and 6:00 PM
- Shifts typically 8.5–11 hours, including unpaid lunch
- No weekends, no call, no overtime hours
Overview
Naval Medical Center Portsmouth (NMCP) is seeking an Orthopedic Physician Assistant to support the Orthopedics Department at NMCP
This is an on-site civilian position providing comprehensive musculoskeletal and orthopedic care to active-duty service members and eligible beneficiaries in a military treatment facility.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of musculoskeletal conditions
- Manage acute and chronic orthopedic issues, including:
- Sprains, strains, contusions, and sports-related injuries
- Acute and chronic back and neck pain
- Nonsurgical musculoskeletal disorders (e.g., rheumatic and collagen diseases, foot disorders)
- Peripheral nerve and neuromuscular conditions
- Chronic pain management and injury rehabilitation
- Functional capacity testing and assessments
- Perform orthopedic pre-, intra-, and post-operative duties, including:
- Pre-admission evaluations and patient work-ups
- Assisting with surgical setup, positioning, and sterile preparation
- First and second assist during orthopedic procedures (suturing, wound closure, splinting, casting)
- Post-operative care, including dressing changes, suture removal, and routine wound care
- Participate in daily rounds and review laboratory results, imaging, and diagnostic studies
- Document patient encounters, progress notes, and discharge summaries in the EMR
- Initiate admission, transfer, and discharge orders under the supervising physician's review
- Respond to orthopedic consults and assist with electronic referral reviews
- Carry a rotating departmental pager during normal duty hours (no after-hours or on-call)
- Prescribe medications in accordance with the MTF formulary, as authorized
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree
- Graduate of an ARC-PA accredited Physician Assistant program
Experience
- Completion of an Orthopedic PA fellowship or residency OR
- Minimum of 2 years of full-time orthopedic PA experience within the past 3 years
Certification & Licensure
- Current NCCPA certification
- Active, unrestricted Physician Assistant license in any state
Compensation:
• Locum Tenens:
$129,000-$134,000 yearly
• Permanent:
$129,000-$134,000 yearly
