Job Description:
Tinian and Rota are remote islands, each with a population around 3000. These are fairly isolated assignments and require strong interest and well-rounded experience in rural medicine practice. A broad skill-set is needed along with the ability to know when to send the patient on or ask for help. Both Tinian and Rota have limited and frequently changing resources. The ER and on-call staff on Saipan are always available for consult. The EHR is RPMS--essentially the same as VistA at VA hospitals.
The Tinian Health Center, built in 1987, is a 5-bed capacity clinic situated right at the center of the island’s business area. Inclusive of the recent expansions, it has now an estimated floor area of 10,800 square feet. Tinian is about 130 miles north of Guam and 5 miles southwest of Saipan, where the Commonwealth Healthcare Corporation hospital is located. The Health Center is currently staffed with a total of thirty-one (31) personnel. The clinic operates through different sections: Emergency Room, Out-patient Clinic, Public Health, Records, Pharmacy, Laboratory, X-ray and Ultrasound, Nursing, Accounting, Housekeeping, Maintenance, Supply, Medical Referral, Social Services, and the Bureau of Environmental Health. THC is the only medical facility on Tinian.
Rota Health Center is an ambulatory satellite facility that runs under the auspices of the Commonwealth Healthcare Corporation on Saipan. The island is located about 50 miles north of Guam and 80 miles south of Saipan. Rota Health Center is currently staffed with a total of forty-one (41) personnel under the direction of a Resident Director. The Center has the following sections: Emergency Room, Outpatient Clinic (Pharmacy, Laboratory, Radiology), Public Health Services (Birth Defects Surveillance, Intervention & Referral to Services Program, Immunization Program, Maternal Child Health Bureau, Non-Communicable Disease Bureau, HIV/STD Program, Chest Clinic), Bureau of Environmental Health, Community Guidance Center (CGC), Health & Vital Statistics Office (HVSO), Womens Infant Children (WIC).
Schedule:
The schedule is worked out between the providers. Typically hours will be 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Overall, the workload is light, but can get busy on occasion. Both islands average 10-20 patients a day.
