Job Title: Bariatric Surgical Physician Assistant

We are a well-established, multidisciplinary bariatric surgery and medical weight loss practice in Horry County, South Carolina, committed to delivering high-quality, compassionate care to patients seeking weight loss solutions. We offer both surgical and non-surgical weight management, guided by ASMBS standards. Our team includes a board-certified bariatric surgeon, registered dietitians, behavioral health specialists, and support staff.
Position Overview:
We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Physician Assistant (PA-C) to join our bariatric team. This role includes first-assisting in the operating room, managing preoperative and postoperative bariatric patients in the clinic, and participating in our medical weight loss program.
Responsibilities:
Surgical Duties:
- First assist in bariatric procedures including laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass, revisional bariatric surgery, and other advanced laparoscopic procedures.
- Support patient positioning, trocar placement, intraoperative suturing/stapling, and hemostasis
- Participate in preoperative and intraoperative time-outs and surgical safety protocols
Clinical Duties:
- Conduct comprehensive preoperative evaluations including history & physicals, risk stratification, and documentation according to ABMBS protocols
- Monitor and manage postoperative follow-up including wound care, medication management, lab monitoring, and nutritional compliance
- Evaluate and manage postoperative complications in collaboration with the surgeon
- Participate in multidisciplinary case discussions and support patient readiness for surgery
Medical Weight Loss Program:
- Evaluate patients enrolled in the non-surgical weight loss program
- Prescribe FDA-approved weight loss medications under supervision
- Monitor patient progress with lifestyle, pharmacologic, and behavioral therapy
- Provide counseling on diet, physical activity, and behavioral changes
Administrative & Team Roles:
- Participate in patient education seminars, support groups, and community outreach
- Document all patient interactions in EMR per regulatory and practice standards
- Maintain compliance with ASMBS accreditation and participate in quality improvement projects
- Collaborate with dietitians, psychologists, and administrative staff
Qualifications:
- Graduate of an accredited PA program; NCCPA certification required
- Licensed or eligible for licensure as a PA in South Carolina
- BLS and ACLS certification required
- Minimum 1 year of experience in general surgery, bariatric surgery, or a relevant surgical specialty preferred; new grads with strong interest in bariatrics will be considered
- Strong knowledge of metabolic disease, obesity management, and post-op bariatric care is a plus
Preferred Skills:
- Experience in laparoscopic surgery
- Familiarity with ASMBS guidelines
- EMR proficiency
- Excellent communication and patient education skills
- Interest in long-term follow-up and building lasting patient relationships
