Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center is a teaching hospital that provides a full range of services, with state-of-the-art technology as well as education and research. The medical center is on a 119-acre campus that features 350 acute care beds. We provide health care services at (Login for Information) in southeast Texas.

Some of the responsibilities are:
- Ability to perform clinical assessments including history and physical, appropriate diagnostic evaluation, and timely implementation of treatment
- Diagnosis and management of hematologic and oncologic emergencies
- Rounding with residents and fellows on the inpatient service as assigned in rotation with other physician team members
- Covering weekends and holidays in rotation with other physician team members
- Physicians must be competent to perform the following procedures:
- Diagnosis and management of malignant hematology, benign hematology, and solid tumor oncologic diseases
- Identification and management of side effects of cancer treatments and hematologic conditions
- Counsel and advise patients with new diagnosis of malignancy or benign hematologic condition
- Teach clinical fellows and residents in the outpatient clinic setting
- Perform bone marrow biopsies as needed and peripheral smear analysis
- Order diagnostic studies and interpret laboratory tests, EKG, and radiology diagnostic tests (e.g. chest x-ray, CT scan, MRI, PET scan)
- Perform outpatient initial and follow up continuity of care for patients with hematologic and oncologic conditions
- Prescribe chemotherapy and other medications within defined scope of practice
- Counsel patients on cancer screening, genetic testing, and cancer prevention
- Responds to consultation requests in a timely manner
- Provides education and counseling for patients and families for their hematologic or oncologic
- Overseeing advance practice practitioners (nurse practitioner, physician assistant), and teaching students, residents and fellows rotating on inpatient and outpatient services
- Maintain communication with referring providers and other specialties (surgery, radiation oncology, transplant, etc...) for patients who require multidisciplinary care
- Participate in multi-disciplinary tumor boards
- Ability to complete electronic consultations (e-consults) for hematologic and oncologic conditions
