Dietitian to work in the Pediatric Clinic at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth (NMCP) in Virginia

The Pediatric Dietitian at Naval Medical Center, Portsmouth provides comprehensive outpatient nutrition care to infants, toddlers, children, and teens.

Caring for children with a variety of conditions including:

  • Obesity
  • Diabetes
  • Failure to Thrive
  • Cystic Fibrosis
  • Cardiovascular Disease
  • Food Allergies
  • GI Complications
  • Feeding Difficulties (with Psychology Consult)
  • Vitamin and Mineral Deficiency
  • Enteral or Parenteral Nutrition Support


QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: Minimum of two (2) years of pediatric nutrition experience
Registration: Possess the credential of a Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN)
Education: Minimum bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and completion of a didactic program in dietetics approved by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) of the American Dietetic Association (ADA).
Internship/Pre-Professional Practice Program: Must have completed a dietetic internship or pre-professional practice program approved by CADE or ACEND

Preferred credential:
Board Certification Certified Specialist in Pediatric Nutrition (CSP), through the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics – preferred, but not required.


CORE DUTIES

  • Provide diet counseling and nutrition care services to pediatric outpatients with complex dietary management needs.
  • Serve as the pediatric outpatient nutritional care specialist, counseling patients with diseases requiring nutritional management.
  • Collect nutritionally relevant data from medical records, including medication, clinical symptoms, laboratory values, dietary history, and anthropometrics.
  • Calculate nutrient and energy intake values and assist in evaluating data from patient’s dietary history.
  • Conduct in-depth diet history interviews with patients and/or caregivers regarding food habits, preferences, and lifestyle.
  • Evaluate anthropometric data, laboratory parameters, drug-nutrient interactions, and diet counseling needs through medical record review and patient interviews.
  • Develop individualized dietary plans based on knowledge of multiple disease states, nutrient metabolism, and nutritional status.
  • Implement dietary regimes for outpatients upon consult from physicians or nurse practitioners.
  • Alter diet prescriptions in consultation with physicians when indicated.
  • Perform evaluations of diet history, including twenty-four-hour recall and food frequency data.
  • Modify dietary fiber, consistency, calories, carbohydrates, fats, proteins, and minerals as needed.
  • Provide alternate dietary plans to accommodate food allergies, intolerances, or preferences such as vegetarianism.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES

  • Provide professional guidance and education in nutritional management to medical residents, interns, allied health professionals, dietetic students, and entry-level dietitians.
  • Act as a liaison between the Nutrition Management Department and the patients, facilitating communication and service delivery.
  • Implement and evaluate Nutrition Management Department functions, enhancing department efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Maintain all required records, reports, and statistics by medical treatment facility standard operating procedures.
  • Assist in developing assessment techniques and education protocols, necessary for comprehensive nutritional care of pediatric outpatients.
  • Serve on multidisciplinary treatment teams composed of physicians, nurses, social workers, and other allied health team members.
  • Review the medical record and consult with team members in planning and implementing nutritional care processes.
  • Use unique approaches to achieve compliance with patients not located in a controlled medical center environment.
  • Record results of nutritional assessments, diet counseling, and progress on follow-up visits in the medical record.
  • Coordinate all Pediatric Dietetic patient education activities for outpatient use, including review and revision of diet instruction materials.
  • Participate and provide in educational programs such as medical conferences, seminars, and workshops related to Asthma/Allergy, Cystic Fibrosis, or other Pediatric Pulmonary research activities.
