Job Description

(Login for Information)at (Login for Information), a leading academic health center, seeks a highly skilled, experienced, multi-organ transplant surgeon to serve as Surgical Director of Kidney and Pancreas Transplantation.  This position is a full-time (1.0 FTE) Assistant/Associate Professor/Professor in the(Login for Information)(Login for Information)Furthermore, the selected candidate will serve as Surgical Director of Kidney and Pancreas Transplantation within the affiliated (Login for Information). The selected candidate will contribute to the department’s mission to educate health science professionals, discover and translate advances in the biomedical and social sciences, and model the best practices in clinical care and public health through research, teaching, clinical service, administrative activities, and other services.

Position Key Accountabilities:

The position requires inpatient and outpatient care at the Abdominal Transplant Center within the Transplant Center at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center; provision of instruction at McGovern Medical School to students, residents, and fellows; and participation in research related to transplantation.

The roles and responsibilities include the following:

  • Providing leadership and oversight for the kidney and pancreas transplant programs, ensuring quality and growth.
  • Collaborating with the Medical Director of Kidney Transplantation and other interprofessional partners to provide comprehensive, patient-centered care.
  • Performing abdominal transplantation, including organ procurement and both pre-operative and post-operative care (inpatient and outpatient clinic) of organ transplant recipients
  • Collaborating with an interprofessional team to provide comprehensive, patient-centered care
  • Educating interdisciplinary learners
  • Supporting current training programs as well as the development of new advanced training programs (i.e., transplant surgery fellowship)
  • Promoting the research mission of the department and university by:
    • providing access to patients, biological specimens, and clinical data for ongoing studies and/or
    • pursuing basic science or clinical research either as a principal investigator or as a member of an interdisciplinary team
  • Engaging as a member of transplant-related committees, such as for Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI), transplant evaluation, and patient selection (i.e., Medical Review Board (MRB).
  • Participating in divisional and departmental activities such as faculty meetings, Grand Rounds, and Morbidity and Mortality conference.
  • Promoting a culture of safety by adhering to evidence-based practices, advocating for patient-centered care, and fostering open communication.
  • Adhering to regulatory standards such as those set forth by CMS, UNOS, and the Joint Commission.
  • Assisting in program growth, accreditation processes, and protocol development. 
 Qualifications:
  • MD, DO, or equivalent degree from an accredited institution.
  • Texas Medical License or be eligible for a Texas Faculty Temporary License (must have license before the appointment start date).
  • Completion of a transplant surgery fellowship accredited by the American Society of Transplant Surgeons (ASTS).
  • 3 years of post-training clinical transplant surgery practice.
  • Board certification or eligibility in general surgery by the American Board of Surgery (ABS).
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Commitment to academic medicine.
